Stainless Steel 440C is a martensitic, high-carbon, high-chromium steel that has 0.95–1.20% carbon and roughly 16–18% chromium. It offers good wear and abrasion resistance, tensile strength of approximately 760–1000 MPa, and exceptional hardness (up to 60 HRC). It works well in dry, mildly corrosive environments, but its corrosion resistance is moderate and lower than that of austenitic grades. After heat treatment, 440C fasteners also provide good dimensional stability and strength, which qualifies them for use in high-friction and mechanically demanding environments.
